Will Wilshere come back the player he was?

Some players in the Premier League tend to see their reputation in the game decrease as their absence is prolonged, with Carlos Tevez now in effect a forgotten man to those who follow Manchester City, especially following the emergence of Sergio Aguero. Other players, though, see their reputations improve as their absence continues, with young Tom Cleverly of Manchester United a prime example of that.

One player who has been greatly missed by his club this season is Jack Wilshere, a young player who came to prominence last season as Arsenal started to gear up for the departure of Cesc Fabregas by making sure the youngster played enough games to be ready for first team Premier League action.

Despite this, the fact of the matter remains that while Arsenal may miss Wilshere – as shown by their indifferent live scores this season – they may need to be prepared for him to come back very slowly. Wilshere has now been out for a very long time and may well not come back as anything like the kind of player he was before he was injured.

With Arsene Wenger all too aware that players who miss out on a proper pre-season tend to come back injury prone and not as fit as they should be, the chances are that Wilshere is going to return a lesser player, meaning that while his return may be a short-term relief to the club’s fans, it is unlikely that he will be able to represent the vital cog that could re-ignite Arsenal’s floundering season by improving their live scores results.

Ultimately, though, when all is said and done, hope is still a major factor for fans and players, and the return of Wilshere could at least bring back belief to a team that

Santos to Bolton?

Owen Coyle is a man who this week has had to come to terms with the loss of one of his best players and a man whose technical ability with the ball will be sorely missed in a Bolton defence that has struggled at times this season to cope with even the simplest of attacking moves from Premier League opposition.

However, with Gary Cahill now all settled at Chelsea following his medical at the weekend and agreement of personal terms with the club (despite the player initially clearly trying to rinse the club out of a few grand more per week than they were comfortable with – nice one Gary!), now is the time for Coyle to move in and try to invest the money from the defender’s sale in an acquisition that would improve the squad as they seek to improve their results and scores win their battle against relegation.

One man being mentioned time and again in connection with an exit from his current club is Giovani Dos Santos, who believes his talent has been largely overlooked by that world-famous man manager Harry Redknapp (you know, the one who is so empathetic with the individuals in his ranks that he’s driven player after player out of the White Hart Lane door, including England internationals).

The Mexican is thought to be seeking a move abroad but Coyle has been a long-time admirer of the youngster and may be able to persuade him to stay with the prospect of becoming a crucial player during the second half of the season at another Barclays Premier League club surely an appealing one for any foreign player currently not making the starting line-up week in week out.
Should Dos Santos decide to opt for Bolton, he could well turn out to be one of the pieces of the jigsaw that ends in Premier League survival this season, no matter how improbable that seems at the moment.

Lancaster announces drastic changes to England squad

There could be little doubting prior to interim head coach Stuart Lancaster revealing the new-look England squad for this season’s Six Nations this week that drastic and irreversible change in personnel was necessary for the future of English rugby. That much was clear at last year’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, with the likes of Mike Tindall finding themselves with more of a natural ability to make headlines away from the field of play than on it, and a number of tired legs from players who will remain nameless holding back what should have been a pacy England attack even in the early group games.

With the former England coaching set-up appearing to pay little to no attention to putting in place a structure for the future of the English team, in an affliction that has also haunted Fabio Capello in the form of his insistence on relying upon the old guard in the national soccer team in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, England rugby fans have been presented with a drastic but ultimately necessary alteration to the look of the squad, with the betting line suggesting that punters have the dramatic cull.

Out go veterans Tindall, Mark Cueto, Riki Flutey, Shontayne Hape, and Nick Easter (and remember of course that the likes of Jonny Wilkinson and Lewis Moody made Lancaster’s job a slightly easier one by announcing their international retirements after the failure in New Zealand), and in come nine uncapped players, including Saracens’ Owen Farrell.

A lack of experience this bunch may possess, that much cannot be doubted, but the online gambling already points to increased optimism about the side’s chances, mainly because what this group of players will be able to boast is a desire to succeed and make a name for themselves in international rugby while not becoming jaded by the riches and downfalls of fame that clearly started to affect a few of the squad last year (if you believe the leaked information that was embarrassingly made public after the squad’s return from New Zealand).

Will the Ferrari car live up to expectations in 2012?

Ferrari have sent out a warning to their F1 rivals that they will be a far different beast on the track when the new season gets underway than the relatively tame animal that managed just the single Grand Prix win last year.

With a number of technical deficiencies leaving the Ferraris trailing behind the likes of Red Bull and McLaren time and again in 2011, team boss Stefano Domenicali has tried to reassure Ferrari fans that technical progress made since the end of the season means that they should be there or there abouts in the sport betting when the racing action gets underway in Australia in mid-March.

Domenicali stated: “This year’s car will be a break from the past. It will be a different car, with new concepts that were not used in previous cars. There is a lot of effort to maximise the performance in all departments”.
Clearly the team is eager to bounce back in style this year, with Ferrari top dogs wasting little time in reacting to last season’s disappointments by being proactive in bringing in a technical geek capable of better understanding and evolving the relationship between the car and the tyres while also bringing in Pat Fry as technical director.

However, those gambling online need to remember that despite these changes and the confident statements being uttered by the likes of Domenicali, the fact remains that there is no reason to expect the other teams vying for F1 supremacy not to have been spending the last couple of months tweaking the technical side of their cars and putting in place changes in personnel to ensure that any improvement made by Ferrari is mirrored, and perhaps even bettered, by the teams that ended 2011 so dominant.

Make or BreakTime for Kean

The ancient tradition of sending a captain down with his sinking ship is one that Blackburn Rovers manager, Steve Kean, has apparently studied at length.

However, as the northerners continue their slide into the doldrums of their division, one can’t help but wonder which of the two entities,  Kean or Blackburn, is dragging the other down into the murky depths of the Premier League.

Blackburn fans would answer the quandary in a heartbeat; the Rovers are a decent side with a poor manager at the helm.
The Blue and Whites’ faithful have evinced their displeasure at Kean’s coaching prowess on a number of occasions, picketing matches and producing paper banners in their reams. The words ‘Steve Kean Out’ have become as ubiquitous as Christmas carols, this winter.

Former boss, Sam Allardyce has placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of Blackburn’s owners, Venky’s London Ltd., who famously postponed the sacking of Kean on the strength of one victory a triumph that was swiftly followed by last weekend’s defeat to the Midlands’ West Bromwich.

Allardyce says that Venky’s do not know enough about football to operate an effective team. Labour politician, Jack Straw, a native of Blackburn, has also pointed the finger at Venky’s, accusing the firm of being inadequate for the purposes of running a football team.

Kean has persistently refused to step down, despite the sports betting markets putting him as favourite for the sack: “I consider myself a fighter”, the 44-year-old explained.

However, the week before Christmas could prove fatal to Kean’s career at Blackburn; Venky’s, an Indian poultry firm, are alleged to have called a crisis meeting to defeat the rising damp threatening Blackburn’s career in the top tier of English football and a few more results and scores like we have seen recently could spell the end of his reign.

The news comes after Kean failed to find four points from two games, a tally that Venky’s had requested, earlier this month.

Blackburn’s match against bottom-dwellers, Bolton Wanderers, on Tuesday, could make or break the Rovers, who are five points adrift of safety, at second-bottom in the Premier League. A loss would almost certainly be the death knell of Kean’s career at Blackburn.
